Obituary of Douglas James Olmstead

In loving memory of Douglas James Olmstead, who passed away peacefully at the age of 82, on February 25, 2026, at the Labrador West Health Centre. Born in Scotland on May 31,1943 Doug emigrated to Canada and grew up in New Brunswick. At the age of 21 the family moved to Wabush, Labrador and Doug began his career working in Wabush Mines. Doug embraced Labrador and loved to spend time at his cabins at Albert Lake and Shabogamo. He spent many hours there trolling for fish and enjoying time with family. An enthusiastic Toronto Blue Jays fan you could find him watching their games from the comfort of his big chair. He was a fierce competitor whether it was darts, pool or a game of crib. Doug leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Mary Colbert; his two sons, Colin (Janet), and Glenn Olmstead; Mary’s children Courtney, Adam, Catherine (Chris), Amanda (Cameron), Sandra (Lenny), Nicole and Gina (Gerard) Colbert.; his grandchildren Kyle, Jaden, Andrew and Aaron Olmstead; step-grandchildren Jacquline, Nicholas, Eric, Felicity, Taylor, Heather, Ty, Kylee; great grandchildren Summer and Noah; his two sisters Sharon Olmstead and Linda Perry; as well as a large circle of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. Predeceased by his son Douglas Olmstead, parents Doug Sr. and Lena Olmstead, brothers Charlie and David Olmstead, sister Tish Cole, and stepson Vince Colbert. Special acknowledgement to his daughter Courtney Colbert who cared for and comforted him during his final days. Our thanks to the nursing staff and Dr. Hans in the Labrador West Health Center for his care over the last year. A special thanks to all the staff of the Long-Term Care Unit for their compassion during Doug’s time there. The family will receive visitors at Temple’s Funeral Home, 620 Hudson Drive, on Sunday March 1st from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 2 pm Monday, March 2 at Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Wabush, with interment to follow in the Wabush Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug’s memory may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. (www.alzheimer.ca)
