Obituary of Francis Joseph Hammond

It is with deep sadness that the family of Francis Hammond “Frank” announce his passing on July 2, 2026, in Labrador City, at the age of 84 years. Frank leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories and is lovingly remembered by his children: Mary (Chris), Colette, Leanne (Dwane), and Leon. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Melissa (Steve), Matthew (Maria), Mitchell (Danielle), Tyler (Kayla), and George, and an adoring great-grandfather to Roman, Ethan, Lou, Levi, Stella and Noah Lee who brought immense joy to his life. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings: Gerard (Sarah, deceased), Martin (Gwen), Bob (Eileen), Paul (Marg), Leannie (Mike), Chris (Valerie), and Betty (Shawn), as well as his sister-in-law Edith. Frank was predeceased by his mother and father, his brothers Don and Joseph, his sister Mary, his great granddaughter Zoey and other family members who welcomed him home. Frank came to Labrador City in 1960, where he began a remarkable career with IOC that spanned 45 years. He took great pride in his work and was honored to be part of the early development of the mine that helped build the town of Labrador City. Know as “Sally” his dedication, strong work ethic, and commitment to his work community were qualities that defined him throughout his life. Known for his generosity and kindness, Frank was the type of person who would truly give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. Above all else, his greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Time spent with family was what he treasured most, and the love he shared with them will remain a lasting legacy. The family finds comfort knowing that Pop spent his final days surrounded by the love and support of those closest to him. Special thanks are extended to Matthew, Maria, Levi, Betty, Shawn, Cassandra and Michel for the care, companionship, chocolate, ice cream and comfy blanket (from Levi) that brought him so much comfort and happiness. The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of the long-term care unit and Dr. Jude who provided exceptional care, compassion, and dignity during Frank's final days. Though he will be deeply missed by his family and many friends, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. And as those who knew him best would say, we can only hope that Frank has finally found his winning lottery ticket. Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever in our hearts.
